Brian Moreland’s Tomb of Gods is a riveting adventure that had me at the edge of my seat from start to finish. Anyone who is a lover of mythology, especially Egyptian mythology, should read this novel.
The basic premise is as follows: As a tomb lost to time is found, the secrets that lay within are much more than any mere mortal can handle, but Imogen will keep her promise and she will finish her grandfather’s work even if it’s the last thing she does.

Moreland’s writing is descriptive. This is displayed by having the story follow a few different characters. I know people do not always like this type of writing and shifting point of view, but I had no difficulty keeping up with the story and all events taking place. Tomb Of Gods takes place during the mid-1930s, featuring British characters, so some of the language is a little different, but it’s easy to understand and follow.

This story contains suspense, action, mystery and shows us that everything isn’t always what it seems. Expect the unexpected. There are monsters who turn out differently than you’d expect, and just when you think you’ve figured out what comes next, you’re hit with a twist.

The prologue captures the type of wild adventure you are about to embark upon and sets the rest of the story up nicely. In the prologue, we meet Commander Tarik, who is telling this part of the story. You immediately know that a burial ceremony is taking place and as each scene is described, you start to realize that this isn’t a normal ceremony. Instead, it’s one that is kept secret. These events captured my attention immediately because even from my little knowledge of Egyptian traditions, I knew that something big was going to happen and Moreland didn’t disappoint. By the gruesome conclusion, you are addicted. Putting the book down is impossible.

Each time I started to feel comfortable with the story and what was taking place, I was shaken to my core. This book resembles the first two Mummy films with an extra dose of horror and suspense.

This is my first novel by Brian Moreland, and he has me intrigued. Based on the conclusion of this novel, I’m hoping it’s not the last we see of the Gods but just the beginning.  I give the book five stars for its originality and suspense.
